I used the material from the first edition of this book as the basis for development of a Master's programme on Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofit Design at Birmingham City University. This chapter gives a brief overview of the course as a background and context for student design projects, followed by a small selection of design schemes developed by the students. Having designed zero carbon buildings for our planet, we subsequently looked at what it would take to design on Mars. This was ‘Zero Carbon Speculation’ work, in which we used Mars as an extreme representation for designing on Earth. It enabled the students to appreciate the conditions on Earth that we take for granted, and to start caring much more about what is happening on and to our planet.
