ABSTRACT
The breaker boys were 8- to 14-year-olds who were forced to leave the playgrounds and the fresh air to work ten hours a day, six days a week, breaking slabs of coal into smaller pieces. They sat in wooden seats in front of bins fed by conveyor belts, in a dark cavern of a mine filled with a constant haze of coal dust.
