ABSTRACT

The previous chapter sought to establish the fact that talent scarcity is universal and that African countries, despite their high unemployment rate, also experience an acute dearth of talent. Unfortunately, few managers recognize that reality. This chapter presents a business case for a paradigm shift in talent management and specifically identifies the areas where a shift is imperative so that organizations, particularly those of African countries, can compete effectively in the global market. The message that pervades all the subsequent chapters is that the level of talent management does not resonate with the demands of globalization. Furthermore, organizations are not doing enough to equip managers with what it takes to operate in a global setting. A change is therefore imperative for the effective management of talent.
