ABSTRACT

There is rarely any question that the abuse of living people is wrong, although, as we shall see, a consensus is lacking concerning ways of dealing with the present day results of past abuse. But can cadavers be mistreated? In what sense can a dead person, someone who is no longer with us, be abused? Is it the memory others have of that person that is being defiled? Maybe the human race is demeaned when one of their kind (even though now dead) is treated in a less than human way. But what is a ‘less than human’ way, and what does this mean when thinking about a dead person?
