ABSTRACT

Christ, like Gandhi, was a social activist who wanted to make the world a better place. He led others in that effort in word, deed, and by example. I don’t have to believe in Christ as the son of God to recognize his work as a social activist. Jane Addams, mentioned earlier in this book as a founder of Applied Sociology, was instrumental in bringing public service and relief to those in need. An exemplar civic and social justice minded person, she was awarded the Nobel Peace prize in 1931 for her work in identifying ways of fostering peace and avoiding war. Addams came from a fairly afÀuent family background, but did not choose to live her life in the comfort available to her.
