ABSTRACT

What is “inequality?” To answer that question one should start with what it means to be equal. In mathematics we refer to one value being equal to another value through an expression like: 2 + 2 = 4, or X = Y. It is easy to see that what is on the left side of the equation is not the same as what is on the right side of the equation. It would serve no purpose to say that 2 = 2 for example, since 2 is 2. Likewise, when we think sociologically, we must avoid thinking of equality in terms of sameness. One person is never exactly the same as another.
