ABSTRACT
Academic life involves a multiplicity of unwritten rules. There are rules regarding the presentation of research, the use of equipment and software, the norms of academic writing and the use of footnotes, as well as rules of conversation in a variety of contexts. There are also numerous unspoken rules regarding desirable conduct and the presentation of self that must be observed, if recognition and a successful academic career are to be achieved.
