ABSTRACT
This book has moved to and fro between the sides of the triangle we noted in our preface: the musician, his music, and his time and place. We hope that this has provided some illumination for the reader about the triangle as a whole. As we have put the book together we have tried to keep to that declared aim and it has generated a fair bit of ambiguity.
