ABSTRACT
The way in which effective MULs solve this conundrum is then advanced, namely; effective MULs optimise their portfolios through a deft application of vertical and horizontal social exchange. This is to say, whatever the organisational context, effective MULs formally and informally transact with unit staff, colleagues and central support in order to effect optimal outcomes. Following consideration of the practices
they deploy, this section will lastly elucidate the personal characteristics that are pre-requisites to operating in such a manner, arguing that, in particular, high levels of self-awareness and mental toughness are particularly important attributes. Further sections will then consider the contribution of the concepts ŠŸŠ—ŒŽȱ‹¢ȱ‘’œȱ‹˜˜”ǰȱ˜••˜ Žȱ‹¢ȱŠ—ȱŠŒ”—˜ •ŽŽ–Ž—ȱ˜ȱ‘Žȱž›‘Ž›ȱ›ŽœŽŠ›Œ‘ȱ required to establish the dynamics of the effective MUL.
