ABSTRACT

Many times men come into group with one basic philosophy: “It was because of the alcohol or drugs that I hit her.” This thought pattern is consistent with the other forms of denial that we see batterers hold onto when they enter into group work—many of those we have covered in other exercises within this book. However, we see a greater number of batterers use alcohol or drug use as the sole excuse for the abuse, often stating that abuse happened “only” when they were intoxicated.
