ABSTRACT
Italian opera continued to be a dominant artistic force in Europe over the next 150 years, but it wasn’t long until various countries developed their own versions of this new type of entertainment. Some of these eighteenth-century productions hold significant places in modern musical theater’s “family tree”; among these are the English ballad opera and the German (and Austrian) Singspiel.
