ABSTRACT
How effective are the police in helping women who have been assaulted within the home? Are the police likely to be effective in preventing further violence? How do the police view their own role in this area of work? If there is agreement that changes in police practice are necessary, what realistically are the chances of these being brought about? This chapter will attempt to answer these questions and will consider the role of the police in helping abused women.
