ABSTRACT
The influence of the pre-accession process on the role of the military in the making of Turkish foreign and security policy should be analysed in two levels: primarily the direct influence of the EU on national security policy and identity, changing the way Turkey perceives its place in the world as a prospective EU member state and secondly the evolution of the role and influence of the security forces through a democratisation process due to compliance with the EU political criteria.
