ABSTRACT
The development of large-scale multi-business corporations, initially in the United States and subsequently through the rest of the industrialized world, achieved massive economies of scale but required competent ‘administrative co-ordination’, to use business historian Chandler’s term for management, in order to achieve productivity and profitability. In those terms the resulting management was highly successful.
