From our concealed position at a window we also attempted, watch in hand, to gauge the speed of movement on this leisurely village street. Here are the walking speeds of the fifty people who were observed while covering a reasonable distance without stopping:

Since for every 100 persons walking in the street there were always about thirty simply standing around, the average speed of movement was extremely low. Once someone trotted past; it turned out to be the village idiot.
