ABSTRACT

This principle also applies to the arm in motion: one can lift the arm but grain down ward, thereby calling attention to the space below; or one can lift it and grain upward, thereby calling attention to the space above. To give the impression of weightlessness, the dancer must grain upward despite the force of gravity. On the other hand, should one wish to give a downward gesture the quality of excessive weight, then one must add downward grain to the body to accentuate the pull of gravity, which will create the illusion of extra weight.
