Whilstthejongleurswanderedthecountrysideentertainingbothrich andpoorandthenewChristiandramaslowlydevelopedinthechurches, thevillagersofEuropewereeagerlyseizingoneverypossibleoccasionto interruptthedrudgeryoftheirdailylivesbyholdingfairsandfestivalsto markeventslikethesafegathering-inoftheharvest,theendofwinter, thereappearanceofplantsandanimalsinspringand,ofcourse,allthe localweddingsandsaints'days.Ontheseoccasionsthepeopleforgot theirtroublesforawhileandindulgedthemselvesinheavydrinkingand uninhibitedmerrymaking.
