ABSTRACT
The Nationalist Party and its leader, Chiang Kai-shek, seemed to have achieved a grand victory during and shortly after the Northern Expedition of 1926–28. By the end of 1928, the nationalists had either defeated or reformed or appeased all the major warlords in China. The Nanjing government was legitimately established throughout the country, and its military forces swelled to approximately two million troops.
