ABSTRACT

If we have to allow for the gannet-like approach of blob processing then we also have to take account of the more reflective style of processing implied by the effects of context and expectations. Some evidence was presented in Chapter 6 that information selection is made easier if there is a semantic thread for the selectional system to follow. In Chapters 7 and 8 we concentrated for the most part on situations where stimuli could be considered in isolation from one another, so there was no message-as-a-whole to exert any effect. Speech recognition was an exception to this although we have yet to discuss it in these terms.
