The aim of this chapter and also the following chapter is to explain some relevant essentials of cultural theory as applied to politics, and discuss the usefulness of this approach and how it may be applied to this study. Relevance here is focussed on helping us answer the key research question posed in the introduction. This is about looking at how cultural theory might help us explain how, in an era of increasing stress on ‘low carbon politics’, there is much more success for deploying renewable energy rather than nuclear power. In doing so I shall look at how different cultural biases interact and in doing so alter technological outcomes.
