ABSTRACT
The division of the Korean Peninsula into a communist northern portion and a pro-Western southern portion is principally remembered for its significance in the Cold War that followed World War II. Perhaps less remarked upon is the fact that the sudden partition of Korea also created a controlled experiment in the social science&---one involving millions of human beings, and in motion over a period of more than four decades.
