ABSTRACT
Soon after seizing power in 1917 the Bolsheviks abolished all previous laws that restricted women's rights. Along with introducing the principle of equal pay for equal work, a special decree proclaimed marriage to be voluntary, giving each partner equal parental and property rights. All subsequent Soviet constitutions contained special articles proclaiming the equality of the sexes in all spheres of life.
