ABSTRACT

I met Carla in 1989 when she was a freshman at a rural high school in southern Arizona. I had been hired to run the English as a Second Language and the French departments. The school administration had made it clear that they were more interested in developing the French foreign language program than in investing in a bilingual program for the increasing numbers of Latino students. Our deep philosophical differences on this point eventually drove me to resign and to accept a new high school teaching position in an urban high school.
