ABSTRACT
Chen Cun, pen name of Yang Yihua (b. 1954), is special among writers in this book because he is a Hui (Chinese of Muslim tradition).1 Although conscious of his background, he fits in well among the Han Chinese, in sharp contrast with Zhang Chengzhi, another Hui writer in this book, and one finds little trace of his ethnic background in his works.
