ABSTRACT

As we return to the private story of the Macbeths, a quick look at the trajectory of their scenes together reveals a pattern to their evolving relationship. They have three scenes before Duncan’s murder is discovered. All are duets and in them the Macbeths plan and execute Duncan’s murder. In this part of the play, we see them onstage together only in private conversations. Each also has a public scene with the court: Duncan and Macbeth, when he returns from the battlefield; Lady Macbeth and Duncan, when he enters her castle.
