ABSTRACT

An article at the beginning of 2003 stated that a woman's right to choose in the USA was now under greater threat than at any time for a century. The Republicans control the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives at least until 2004 (Campbell 2003). In the eyes of the author, Duncan Campbell, this gives the opponent of abortion the opportunity to make a number of challenges. He drew particular attention to three likely developments. The first was a renewed attack on partial birth abortions which has occurred, the second a change in the law to allow hospitals to refuse to carry out abortions without losing federal funding and the third was the creation of a new crime, that of the taking a minor across state borders for an abortion. These changes are in addition to possible changes in the composition of the Supreme Court which could lead to earlier rulings being reversed.
