ABSTRACT
The Church has developed structures and patterns in liturgy because this allows those who worship to make connections, through memory, with past experiences. It also facilitates greater participation because the worshipper is able to recall the structure and the fixed wording of the liturgy. When the brain works to established patterns it expends less energy in the activity, and therefore spare energy is available for the important spiritual work of communing with God.
