ABSTRACT

The pervasive impact of the christological tradition of Sibylline prophecy on the reception of the Tiburtina can be seen in the Tiburtina’s treatment by Matthew Paris (d. 1259) in his Chronica Majora. As I shall show, Matthew deploys the Tiburtina in a context dictated not by any political significance he attached to the prophecy, but by his reading of the Church Fathers.
