In his 2008 commencement speech at the California Institute of Technology,
Robert Krulwich, science reporter, urges pending graduates to discuss science
with nonscientists. Krulwich makes the case that “scientists need to tell stories
about science because science stories have to compete with other stories about
how the universe works and how the universe came to be.” Krulwich claims
that scientific narratives can tell stories about nature that, while still true and
complicated, can awe, excite, and draw people in. Krulwich’s call for compelling
scientific narratives is reflected in the program he co-hosts, Radiolab.
