An article – un artículo – is a type of word that precedes a noun and signals whether that noun refers to a specific element, or to an unspecified one. In the case of a specific element, the definite article is used (‘the house’, ‘the apple’), and in the case of an unspecified element, the indefinite article is used (‘a house’, ‘an apple’).
