ABSTRACT

Veronese’s six Feasts for monastic refectories demonstrate his mastery of narrative and response to the Council of Trent. The Venetian tradition of incidental detail was not allowed to distract from the central subject, even in the last of the series, the Feast in the House of Levi. Commissioned by the Dominicans of SS Giovanni e Paolo, the omission of the central moment, the penitent Magdalen anointing Christ’s feet, prompted Veronese’s appearance before the Inquisition on 8 July 1573. Annunciation, Gallerie dell’ Accademia, Venice, 275 × 543 cm https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-u.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315209135/6cd42449-4b60-43dc-899f-075c16b38f46/content/pla5.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
