ABSTRACT
Marine ecosystems around the world are ecologically, culturally, and economically important. They are under pressure from myriad human activities in developed and developing countries. Consequently, marine and coastal conflict is ubiquitous. Synopses of the 15 marine and coastal conflicts from around the world, which were used as the basis for an analysis of the causes of such conflict, are presented in this chapter. The case studies cover a broad range of marine resource conflicts including water, fish, oil and gas, wind and wave energy, mangroves, saltmarshes, and amenity. They cover conflicts that have been resolved, and some which are still ongoing. This overview provides some insight into just how diverse marine and coastal conflict can be.
