ABSTRACT
In modern economic, social, and political organization the railways play a very important part, and it is largely as a result of the development of the railway that modern conditions have been evolved. All the characteristics of the modern industrial period—intensive division of labour, specialization of industry, large-scale production, localization of industry, the growth of great cities, world-wide markets, world supplies of raw materials—are dependent on adequate and efficient means of transport.
