I now focus on the individual employee perceptions of law and consider the role of various aspects of social context. Because the focus in this book has been on a better understanding of the role of social context in the interpretation and implementation of law, I asked employees at four of the firms in this study to define sexual harassment law. 1 explore individual understandings of law by presenting five sexual harassment vignettes, or fact patterns, to each employee which, among other things, examined when individuals will describe conduct as illegal sexual harassment. The survey explored individual understandings of the implementation of the law by asking these same individuals what they believe should be done by the organization in response to the conduct described in the vignettes. 2
