Introduction Anh and Mike, in our Unit III opener, are uncertain about how to prepare two different presentations for college students on a local campus. Although they have the advantage of knowing the audience, at this point they are stuck somewhere in the second step of speech preparation. As you read this chapter, identify at least three major skills that Anh and Mike will need to accomplish their goal of designing their topic and finding quality supporting materials. In addition, look for specific questions to answer in the margins at various spots throughout this chapter. Refer to the Unit III Scenario on page 276 to refresh your memory as needed. It is important to remember that audience analysis should be every speaker’s overarching concern throughout the process of developing a presentation. Every decision you make from now on will be made based on who you perceive your listeners to be. Now we are ready to discuss both the second and third steps in preparing a speech.
