ABSTRACT

This story shows how the Balkan war between July 1991 and early 1996 1 was, both directly and indirectly, a global catastrophic event. It is my research journey into how the Balkan war impacted upon the lives and experiences of Serbian Australians. While many of us have been loungeroom spectators of the conflict, people with cultural and emotional ties to the region identified completely with the pain and anguish of what they saw night after night on the television screen. Television and newspaper images of the conflict sent shock waves through the world and these have included the most horrific scenes of carnage, incarceration and massacre. 2
