ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the issue of spatial data sharing across organisational boundaries in more detail and provides the theoretical context for this research. The overall argument is that the issue of spatial data sharing needs to be addressed by explicitly taking into account the social factors that may influence data sharing. The resultant insights are expected to aid the promotion of spatial data sharing across organisational boundaries to help GIS to be used more effectively. This study examines the nature of the conditions under which the different actors involved with spatial data are willing to engage in sharing it.
