ABSTRACT
Before finally examining a number of political systems both inside and outside the Commonwealth, the relationship between democracy and economic development should be addressed. A number of developing countries have argued that they cannot introduce, or will have extreme difficulty introducing, multi-party democracy because they do not have a long-established and developed market economy. After all, capitalism preceded truly democratic institutions in Western Europe and North America. Furthermore, successful economies, as in the Far East, can exist without democracy.
