A total of 317 axes from Central Europe, with a considerable emphasis on the North Alpine region, are used for this study on skill. Selected from two monographs published by Kienlin (2008b; 2010) were 217 axes. These axes form an important dataset because their production processes can be accurately reconstructed from the metallographic data that are available for each of them. One additional axe, number 322, is taken from publications elsewhere (Berger 2012; Berger et al. 2013; Grolimund et al. 2011).
