ABSTRACT

Efficiency is about making optimal use of time, money, effort, and resources to increase productivity, while minimizing wastage. Efficiency is the relationship between one or more ‘inputs’ (resources or processes), and one or more ‘outputs.’ Efficiency is promoted as improving accountability for public monies, while also enhancing public management and promoting transparency to aid informed consumer choices. Efficiency, is not so much about saving time (as the word used to more regularly imply), as it is about saving money – currently, educators associate ‘efficiencies’ and ‘efficiency drives’ with cost-savings exercises.
