ABSTRACT
The major native-speaker varieties of English are those that we have already discussed: the forms of English spoken in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the Caribbean. There are, however, many other places in the world where there are long-established communities of native English speakers. We mentioned some of them in Chapter 1. Here we give a brief account of these varieties and their histories.
