ABSTRACT

"Why didn't the kings come?" was a banner headline in the Stockholm Expressen on October 19, 1979. The accompanying photograph presented two of the world's most photogenic queens smiling at one of the most photogenic scenes that a Swedish daycare center can provide: two-year-olds playing naked in water in a plastic-lined room especially designed for the purpose. The queens were the Swedish Silvia and the Spanish Sofia. The missing kings were Spain's Juan Carlos and his host, Sweden's Carl Gustaf, who had gone instead to examine cables and other communications equipment at L. M. Ericsson.
