ABSTRACT

War is a violent struggle between groups for political ends. Warfare is the conduct of war in its many forms. Once these definitions are accepted, the discussion of war and warfare are relatively easy. But to paraphrase the great Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz, 1 everything in war is easy, but even the easiest things are very difficult. War, at its core, is an unending human condition as groups try to gain power, prestige, and identity at the expense of others. Mankind is inherently violent, greedy, and selfish, and resorts to violence as a mechanism to prosper. Unfortunately, the history of mankind is replete with examples of war and warfare; war is the rule rather than the exception. Equally unfortunately, war and warfare will exist for the foreseeable future; there are few reasons to expect that war and warfare will recede.
