They have caught the eye and imagination of architects and planners, and many others, all over the world. They are visited and photographed, admired and disparaged, praised and criticized by thousands of people every year. The architecture has been described as dull, drab and visually-uninspired. But illustrations of development in London's new towns adorn every substantial book on planning (Thomas, 1969a, p. 373).
