ABSTRACT

Following the previous chapter, which focused on establishing your credentials early on in your research career, this chapter explores how to build a critical mass of colleagues and peers to work with, both within your institution and beyond. It is divided into three sections: research projects and leading teams, PhD supervision, and external networking. Each section examines ways in which you can meet and work with kindred spirits, as well as ways of working with individuals, teams and institutions who do not share your vision or goals. Recognising that much of who you work with can be outside of your control early on in your career, the chapter’s emphasis is on what you can do to shape your career. It is framed by two questions: Who do I want to be working with, and on what, in 5–10 years’ time? Why?
