ABSTRACT

The first of three chapters on research, this chapter will examine the process of establishing yourself as a bona fide and fully-fledged research-active academic with a sustainable career trajectory ahead of you (see Gilbert, 2006 for a good example of how this has been done elsewhere). Exploring current publishing cultures and the pursuit of research funding, and contextualised by the ongoing issues of the Research Excellence Framework in the UK, open access publishing and journal citation rankings, it will consider the tensions of credibility and popularity, alongside targeting journals and handling rejection.
