ABSTRACT

As noted in previous chapters there is a wealth of instructive guidance available on ‘how to teach in HE’. Indeed, as an early career academic you may already be familiar with this literature having been required by your institution to take part in formal training on how to teach. Drawing on these and the previous chapters in this section, the chapter first examines the impact of measurement and teaching evaluations of your work. It then explores some of the diverse teaching responsibilities and activities that you can take on as an early career academic, and the challenge of establishing when to agree to undertake teaching that will be beneficial for you/the students/the department/the university, and when to negotiate (and how!). It will, in essence, share with you some of the less visible parts of teaching, the parts of which you may not yet be aware of, and the bits you may have some autonomy over (and the bits you don’t).
