ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the most likely group of students you will teach, undergraduate students, and the impact of their cultural and technological background on their expectations and your teaching practice. Reflecting on the last 20 years of social and economic change, the first part of the chapter explores the characteristics of the average 18 to 21-year-old undergraduate, and the knock-on impact on their expectations of attending university. In providing you with important context regarding teaching practice in HE, the chapter examines the key characteristics of the undergraduate student population today and the consequences for student expectations regarding HE and those who provide/facilitate it.
