ABSTRACT

While the previous chapter considered administration and management within HE institutions, this chapter examines opportunities and challenges in taking on leadership tasks and positions of influence beyond your university. It reflects on the pros and cons of assuming commitments outside of your ‘everyday work’ and, critically, considers some of the skills and insights you might be able to provide as an academic in sectors and organisations outside of the academy. It is the closest this book comes to discussing employment for academics outside of HE, although it is important to note that that is not the main goal of this chapter – if that is of interest to you, please see the further reading section at the end of this chapter.
