ABSTRACT

Overlook is a historic property being reimagined as a site of agricultural, cultural, and ecological productivity, using the cultural landscape to guide farmers and biologists as they actively manage the land together. At Overlook, agricultural activity enhances ecological function, and conversely, ecological improvements create agricultural opportunities. The former Olmsted plan was designed to evolve, incorporating the economic and ecological benefits of forestry as an agricultural pursuit. A century later, the family is working with a team that includes landscape architects, conservation biologists, and agricultural consultants to transform the property into a productive farm, an ecological reserve, and a laboratory for education and research.
